History
Incorporated in the state of Texas during the summer of 2004 as Nerdshack LLC by a dedicated group of programmers, the company has changed significantly since the days it operated as a single server in the back of an advertising agency closet. To reflect that change, we officially changed our name in December of 2005 to Lavabit LLC. The name change was made to reflect our change from a service catering primarily to information technology professionals into the mainstream e-mail service provider it is today.
Lavabit was founded as a direct reaction to the larger free e-mail services available. We felt it was possible to create an e-mail service that was fast, reliable, feature rich and didn't achieve profitability by prostituting its user base to marketers. To this day our primary goal continues to be providing quality service to our user's even at the cost of our own bottom line.
A large part of Lavabit's personality comes from its founders. A small group of Dallas based programmers with extensive experience building mission critical systems and high profile websites. It is with this experience, a maniacal level of dedication, and few smart people that Lavabit has been built.
Today Lavabit provides e-mail service to over 60,000 individuals, who collectively send and receive over 200,000 electronic messages per day. At any given moment almost 1,000 of those users will be connected to the Lavabit network. Since the deployment of our proprietary mail server our network has handled over 50,000,000 messages. Our growth continues with an average of 100 new user accounts per day.
To economically and reliably handle the growth of our userbase Lavabit has developed a proprietary mail server which currently supports the SMTP and POP3 protocols. This proprietary mail server combines the best open source libraries to provide a fast, reliable mail server which rivals anything else available today. Our mail server has been written exclusively in C, and runs across a cluster of Linux based servers. Lavabit has been using its proprietary mail server since February of 2005.
A large part of Lavabit's success comes from its strategic partnerships with hosting providers and advertising firms. As a result Lavabit has a network backed by redundant power systems, cooling, and diverse fiber connections to the Internet. All secured in a facility that is monitored 24x7x365 by Lavabit network engineers.
Our partnership with SkyyMedia, a leading designer of websites and advertising materials has provided invaluable expertise for the design and layout of Lavabit's website and forthcoming webmail system. Our partnership with Spark Communications has helped us develop a consistent brand with compelling copy. Without these partnerships our company of programmers would have the best text only website on the Internet.
Even with everything that's been accomplished, there is still lots left for Lavabit to do. The year 2007 has already brought a redesigned website, with support for IMAP and webmail just around the corner. If you would like to be a part of this success, Lavabit is always interested in taking on corporate e-mail customers, and other strategic partners.
